Prudence is the best part of valor, so taking into account
the distance to be traveled and the level of expertise of his team, Tom wisely
decided to take the Jeep Cherokee rather than the motorcycles for the next
stage of the adventure. We are going north to the city of Coban (but first have
to go east to go north), and from there will be head for the Lanquin River. The
trip was uneventful, except for two separate one-hour blocks of traffic due to
construction. The second came around noon, just as we were anticipating coming
to the chicharroneria Los
Chicharrones de Don Carlos to have our lunch. As luck would have it, the
traffic jammed just 10 m from the break in the middle barrier that would allow
us to drive into the restaurant! It was torture being so close to the wafting
aromas of carnitas and chicharrones, and yet not be able to go in, so
eventually I got down, bought a couple of orders to go, and we ended having a
fine lunch in the car.
The whole afternoon we had heavy rain (thank you Tom for
choosing the enclosed jeep rather than the open bikes), and it took a lot
longer to get to our destination than expected (even though we were in
reasonably good winding roads, our average is 40 km per hour). Toward the end
we got into the dirt road from hell to go down, down to the valley of the
Lanquin River, where we finally reached our destination, the El Retiro de
Lanquin resort (resort in the sense of the resort of the 1930’s, where basic
accommodations are simply the springboard for nature walks, swims, and other
group activities).
We had a simple Italian dinner buffet, and spent the
afternoon playing a “Fact or Crap” trivia game.
